Namaskaram Swami,

Humble pranaams!

Adiyen has come across quite a few people (including adiyen’s maternal grandmother), who weren’t able to tolerate even hearing ‘PanchAksharam’, even if it happens to be in a television program.

Their immediate reaction was to close their ears stating that they would like to avoid incurring sin (pApam)!

While the question of supreme brahmam is not the point of debate here, adiyen really wonders if such a reaction is really warranted and endorsed by scriptures?

Wouldn’t such a mindset put us in continuous (internal) conflict instead of just letting it go easily?

More importantly, wouldn’t bhagawan treat such a gesture as ‘bhAgavata nindanai’ ??

Srimate Raamanujaye Namaha,
Swami a little background about their religious belief and reason they gave for that if explained would make the question more clear.

Dhanyosmi swami, I read.the question again..it clear now..i did not read properly before perhaps..I initially read it as panchasamskaaram and was wondering why..when I read again understood your question.

Swami I think the action itself cannot be judged..their internal motivation determines the outcome..

This may be acceptable for a pure devotee who is constantly in love and remembrance of Krishna alone and does not want to get distracted..but perhaps not for those who do not mind watching movies and TV pgms..

As we do not know each person’s internal attitude best is not to judge.

In Srirangam I have seen Mami’s close their ears for Shiva
Next in adjacent ThirvAnaikovil Mami’s close ears for Ranga

Then understood it’s “EkAgraha Chinthanai”

When my mom asked a north Indian Krishna Bhaktha sAmiyAr
He asked “Who is Shakthi”?

Same Mami’s will not close ears during Vishnu Sahasranama

This is news for me! Adiyen has never ever come across Smartas who dared to insult PerumAl in any form. Perhaps such instances could merely have been an outcome of retaliation. Don’t really know!

Namaskaram,

If I happen to hear Shiva name chanting etc., I would not try to cover my ears etc…

Coz, It is the TRUTH that Bhaghavan is the SOLE creator of all!! whether you accept this or not,, is based on the wisdom that you have attained…  this doesn’t make any impact on the TRUTH or believers or so called the followers….etc.,

Shiva is also an aAthma and also a position appointed by Bhagawan…

Hence, if you have realize this and attained the wisdom then whatever you hear or see should not have had an impact on you…

Thus, to adiyen, it is a matter of how you react to those….that’s all!!!!

Adiyena Ramanujadhasan.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Respected All Brothers,

Adiyen as usual would like to “Pick your (each Bro’s) Brain” and stir the conversation by referring a story in Puranam which involves three of them together,
One is ParamAthma “SriKrishna”,
Second is Devata “Shiva”,
Third is Cannibal “Kandakarnan” who eats human dead bodies. Kanda means bell, Karna means ears. One who wears bell on ears.

Story:
*************

Kandakarnan was a spirit that ate dead bodies. He was an ardent devotee of Shiva and as such hung a bell in his ear to prevent him from hearing Narayana’s name being said.

Hence he was called kaNdAkarNan. One time he went to Kailasha and prayed to Shiva to help him leave the spirit state and attain moksha. Shiva told him that he could not give him liberation and that only Narayana could do that. However, he gave the spirit a suggestion.

Shiva said “Lord Narayana has appeared on earth as Sri Krishna now. I asked Him one time to give me an opportunity to give Him a boon. He agreed and told me that He would come to Kailasha as Krishna and get a boon from me. When He comes here for that, if
you pray to Him, He will give you what you seek”. He also gave a description of Krishna’s form to Kandakarnan so he would recognize Krishna when he saw Him.

Kandakarna then thanked Shiva, removed the bell from his ear and keeping Krishna’s image and name in his mind started waiting for His arrival.
One day, he saw Krishna from a distance and recognized Him right away. Immediately he killed a rishi who was nearby with a spear and brought the body to Krishna. Stopping Krishna he said “I have heard from Shiva that You are the one capable of giving moksha.

I just now killed this rishi and brought his body just for You. Please accpet my offering”
and prayed to Him sincerely. He did that because the shastras say that whatever a person eats according to his state, he should offer that to the divinity that he prays to, before eating it.
Since he had offered something to Krishna and only to Him, with great sincerity, Krishna
accepted the offering and granted him moksha. He also granted to moksha to Kandakarna’s brother, based on his prayer. It is understood that the rishi who was killed
by Kandakarna and offered to Krishna also attained moksha
**************
Disclaimer: We are not Cannibal, so we Humans have to offer only the prescribed Satvik food to SriKrishna as per Shastras and Acharyad.

Anyway, coming back to the stirring portion picking beach Bros’s brain.

When SriKrishna ParamAthma Himself is not offended by a Cannibal wearing bell on his ear and ringing it hearing NarayanA name and HE still gave him Moksha, so it shouldn’t be a big deal for a Senior staff like Shiva who works for his Master SriKrsihna to get offended when someone hangs/rings bell in their ears hearing Shiva name, since Shiva leads a life keeping SriKrishna as role model.
However one may appear like a clown if one wears bell in their ears in present period, so the modern devices like earplug or headphone or bluetooth ear-set can be worn, if one prefers to avoid hearing Shiva name. Shiva should be ok with it since his Master SriKrishna Himself is ok with Kandakarnan wearing bell against Him.

So What does all Bro’s think about the Puranam story and idea of closing ears using modern devices when hearing devata names?

Adiyen (ElayaAlwar) Srinivasa (DhoddayacharyAr) Dasan.

I heard this story of Kandakarna in the upanyasam of sri Velukkudi Krishnan swamy.

He did that because the shastras say that whatever a person eats according to his state, he should offer that to the divinity that he prays to, before eating it.From ElayaAlwar

Would like to know the reference of the shastras, if you are aware, only for the information.

Swamy,
Namaskaaram.
I think, Answer lies in this, in an indirect manner:

https://asitis.com/3/13.html

Chapter 3: Karma-yoga
TEXT 13

yajna-sistasinah santo
mucyante sarva-kilbisaih
bhunjate te tv agham papa
ye pacanty atma-karanat

SYNONYMS
yajna-sista—food taken after performance of yajna; asinah—eaters; santah—the devotees; mucyante—get relief from; sarva—all kinds of; kilbisaih—sins; bhunjate—enjoy; te—they; tu—but; agham—grievous sins; papah—sinners; ye—those; pacanti—prepare food; atma-karanat—for sense enjoyment.

TRANSLATION
The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.

Adiyen.
Ramanujadasan.

Thank you for the detail.

I prefer to give benefit of doubt and would  like to avoid taking implicit meaning.

I understand, in Manusmiriti, eating of meat is mentioned to be not a sin, when one honours the gods and Ancestors. But I am not sure whether it means offering to God first as mentioned in this thread.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

When the wtitten details are read with pre-conceived mind set looking for reasons to self justify meat eating, then all the details will be read incorrectly. The above thread shows Kandakarnan is Cannibal, so he offered the rishi. Humans are not cannibals.
Next if Human offers meat to BhagavAn, they can choose to do so, but the outcome is Rajo/Tami Gina. SriKrishna in BhagavAt Gita says, for Satva Guna, one should offer only the prescribed Satvik foods.

Adiyen believe, this was detailed in the above thread in crisp. Copy Pasting again.
**********
Disclaimer: We are not Cannibal, so we Humans have to offer only the prescribed Satvik food to SriKrishna as per Shastras and Acharyas.
***********

Adiyen believe the “Disclaimer” is more clear for any current Satvik persons to understand. The only persons who have difficulty in understanding are those who are still in transition from rajo/tamo (past times meat eaters in same life) now changing to Satvik food eating.

Since devathas have rajo/tamo Guna, one will get the same gunas when they pray them as Shastras say:

“Yatha Upasana Yatha Phalam”.

So change the Upadana ONLY on Sriman NarayanA and follow only the SriVaishnava Acharya lineage who don’t follow devathantra upadanas.

So it is understandable that many persons find themselves in predicament of not being able to fully transition to Satvik nature, but eventually with CONTINOUS, CONSTANT, CONSISTENT VISHISTAADVAITA Acharya GuruParamparai dyanam and devathantra sambhandha varjanam, it is possible over a period of time to become Satvik in nature and these questions like did Shastras say meat eating allowed or not, can we pray devataas in parallel and still get Moksha should subside after the Prapatthi on Acharya ThiruvAdi.

Adiyen (ElayaAlwar) Srinivasa (DhoddayacharyAr) Dasan.

on February 15, 2022

Typo. It’s actually

“Yatha Upasana Tatha Phalam”.

Examples,
If one eats meat, we will be eaten as a meat by someone in some Janna.
So the question is, if we eat plant, will we become plant and eaten by someone. Yes, if we didnot have Ramanuja Sambhandha, then we will be born as something.

on February 15, 2022

As I indicated, my intention is not to pick up discussion, only to have reference. I decided not to have any long discussion for some reason and will be a mute observer to a large extent.

I believe shastras are common to everyone. Isn’t it. If there is an exception, probably it would have bee specified.

Is not Manusmiriti common to all?. It clearly indicates about meat eating and states it is not a sin, when one honours the gods and ancestors. Yes. It does not explicitly talks about three gunas in this regard.
