Why unnecessary hoopla around Manusmriti

Swami,

NamaskAram!

We all keep witnessing an unnecessary hue and cry of political leaders, and leftists around ‘Manusmriti’ time and again.

But within the limits of my social acquaintances, I have seen many of us following either ‘Apastamba’s’ (by and large)’, ‘BaudhAyana’s’, ‘DrAhyAyana’s’ (SAmam), AsvalAyana (Rig), and several others, but none say they follow ‘Manusmriti’.

There are also scholarly arguments that Manusmriti was not preserved in its original form and there were some unacceptable add-ons to it later.

Adiyen’s question is “does Manusmriti really have any context in our life today?” Is it really infallible and unquestionable like ‘Sruti’ itself? Or is it a non-extant text?

Good question Swamy but if I say this someone will say “this is already answered”.

Vikram Swami,

I opened up this discussion of Manusmriti only because it says that

“Anybody (from B/K/V varna) who fails to do the ‘nitya karmAs’ of ‘veda adhyayanam (at least a few verses), aupAsanam, agnihotram, and sandhyAvandanam’ would automatically fall into the 4th varna for all practical purposes”. I don’t know but there might be other smritis (including BG) too that might have stressed upon these duties as nitya karmAs.

When even sandhyAvandanam (as a daily karmA) has become a rarity these days, is there a need to talk about the rest of the karmAs mentioned herein?

So technically, aren’t most of us falling under the 4th varnA by default, where steadfast devotion to bhagawan is the only source that can save us a bit, if not completely?

@Jayaram Swami: Though this is not an answer to your question in the other thread, I believe it still provides a certain perspective to that question, while we await the final judgment from ‘Velukkudi Swami’ too.

This adiyen mentioned several times in Dharma Sandeha.

Also those who cross ocean is NOT A BRAHMIN. Have you seen any jeeyar crossing ocean?

Swami,

Actually, all these duties are interwoven and connected.

Anybody who had been maintaining Agni, can’t go out of home for a longer period, hence there is no question of traveling abroad. SandhyAvandanam, of course, can be done wherever we are.

But technically, going to China, Pakistan, Russia (entire Asia), the Middle East, and European countries can’t be termed as crossing the ocean. But going to even Sri Lanka and Andaman& Nicobar means crossing samudram!

How surprising and interesting is this!

Nice analogy Swamy. I agree on the interconnection to an extent.

Adiyen beg to disagree. How then people went to yatra to tirumala & other long distance Divya kshetras by walk on olden days?in fact yatrigan used to stay for minimum three days in a Divya Desam those days.

There should be exceptions or alternatives specified. It includes management of shaligramam aathu Perumal.

After Ram construct the bridge how can we call India to SriLanka as ocean crossing? 🤔

I think these vidhis are outlined in the relevant Grihya and Srauta sutras, like what happens during ‘KshetrAdanam’ and what is the prAyaschittam, etc.

True, but for all practical purposes, today we cannot reach Lanka without crossing the ocean!

” prAyaschittam ” for what , visiting Divya desams? 😊

on April 14, 2022

My dad told if we happen to visit Shiva temples we need to wash our legs because it’s equivalent to visit rudra bhumi

on April 14, 2022

Thirupullani is an exception. Technically we cannot stand on sea shore & wash legs by sea wave usually but Thirupallani snanam is punyam.

PrAyaschittam is applicable only if the sacred fire gets extinguished during our absence, otherwise nothing!

Yes, I do remember! But the story told to me was a little different at my home. Because ‘MahAdevan’ dwells in smasAnam, if not kuliyal, at least ‘kaal alambal’ is required.

” PrAyaschittam is applicable only if the sacred fire gets extinguished during our absence, otherwise nothing! ” – yes Swamy, I understood it was a kind of a joke from my side. Yes, that Agni has to be maintained.

The shape / dimension of that homa kundam also specified. Some triangle & square shaped. I heard in Dushyant Sridhar Swamy upanyasam.

Do you remember, Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy once told, when we do Nithya Karma like Sandhyavandhanam, when Perumal utsavar comes on the road in front of our house, we should prioritise Perumal over Nithya Karma.

Vikram Swami,

AupAsanam is, by and large, a non-extant ritual now. What is even more surprising is that even the most pious brahmana groups do not follow it anymore.

Since it is also called ‘GrihyAgni’, it was used for all domestic purposes.

But yet another question remains! Irrespective of varnAs, almost everyone does fire oblation during the marriage. So where that fire used to come from (in the earlier days)? Similarly, all the varnAs follow cremation with the exception of a few doing burial. Does that mean all four varnAs, once upon a time, used to follow this procedure? Aren’t these confusing?

Sri:

“Aupasana,” we are doing a formality before shraddham etc. Indeed we are doing. We are not Vedic brought up. Of course we are bound to have confusions.

Regarding cremation, my Iyengar friend told aupasana Agni used for father cremation in last rites.

I heard different story though prior to this.

Each Agni is different
* Marriage Agni
* Death Agni

Then how come aupasana can be used on father’s rites? 🤔

Best to reach out to our Acharya and do as prescribed. Else we will be lost in vicious cycle “am I right or not?” .

We cannot self pity forever.

Why does Vikram Swami say so? I believe you meant ‘we’ as ‘individuals (all of us)’ and not ‘we’ as our whole sampradAyam itself?

This is what I have also heard. It is the same agni that had been used in the marriage ritual, had been used for ‘Antyeshti’ too. In fact, I have read that even for mundane domestic fire requirements, it had been used.

Yes, Swami! In fact, even before the cremation of a corpse, aupAsanam is done as a formality I believe!
