Vikram Swami, such a learned devotee like you asking this question at first surprised adiyen. Simple answer, which devareer very well knows. The body is not a living being, the soul inside is what makes it active like a sim inside a phone (bad analogy).  The person (atma) never dies, when it leaves the body it’s called a dead body. The relationship devareer had with that Soul is visible till the body hosts that soul. It’s beyond comprehension once the soul takes another body or gets liberated.
