Our sasthras say, we should not cross sea.
But to see Rameshwaram temple, Ramar padam, vibhishana Sharanagati temple, Dhanushkodi, we need to cross sea and enter Rameshwaram island.
Does this not violate the rule of sasthra ??

Adiyen has heard that there was a time when visiting Bombay (now Mumbai) was a nishedam, because historically Mumbai was nothing but a group of 7 islands, though now connected to each other.
Kanchi MahAperiyavar had talked about it in one of his discourses.
Some of my relatives have done ‘Sethu SnAnam’ (Rameswaram) as a prAyaschittam for visiting and staying with their children in the U.S.
But devareer’s question here is about that very prAyaschitta kshetram itself!!!
But let us wait to hear from other swamis!

Swamy, also for going to bet dwarka,( place where sudama met krishna, and place where krishna’s 8 wives are in 8 temples ), we need to cross sea through boat and reach bet dwarka island.
But according to sasthras, “where sea approaches, bharatha desa ends ”
Swamy, also to see vivekanda rock memorial, we need to cross sea and reach that place.
Is it acceptable? ?

Romba pAthA mudiyadhu. What if there was land and now blocked by Sea?
Dhanushkodi best example. My father worked there. Now that place itself engulfed by sea.
Therefore the acceptable boundaries of Bharatha Desham must prevail.

Sundara Ramanuja Dasa Swami’s question was about the very prAyaschitta kshetram (Rameshwaram) itself.
His question was how would visiting Rameswaram not amount to crossing the sea?
Technically, Rameswaram is indeed separated from our mainland (India) through PAmban channel

There is also yet another perspective to this rule.
It would mean going to Russia, Iran, and even European countries would not be against the shastram.
When we say so, we imagine only peninsular India as the starting point and hence the flights would anyway have to cross the ocean.
But people are leaving from the northern part of India also (say from Delhi, Punjab, Kashmir, etc.) to these foreign countries?
Then all the mentioned foreign countries are mere land extensions without an interruption of any ocean.
The irony is visiting Sri Lanka requires prAyaschittam, whereas visiting Russia or Iran does not require any prAyaschittam!!!

Also, usage of sanitizer to get rid of contaminants – here no worries as to whether sanitizer has to worry about contaminants as sanitizer can per se takes care of acquired contaminants – so powerful.
Like that, the Kshetram is so powerful enough to take care!

Initially in olden times, rule was set by predecessor as crossing ocean is prohibited inorder to contain the devotees in the area/Temple where they were serving, so that the services could be continued and utilized without hinderance, with the same group of orthodox people, so that they don’t need to re-teach all the Acharam lessons/train a new person, which can be done but it takes little longer time. However, if it is necessary for service or out of love towards Almighty GOD, there are exceptions allowed. Like Velukkudi Swami has crossed oceans couple of times to travel US, Australia and other countries to propagate Sampradhayam Vishayam. Srila Prapupadha in the past came to US by boat upon His Acharya Agjya to propagate Krishna consciousness.
In Sampradhayam, Vibhava Avataram and Archai is same. Swami Ramanujar in Vibhava Avataram did not cross ocean, but in Archai Avataram has crossed many oceans and residing in US, UK, Australia temples to bless devotees outside present India. Also devotees/Acharyas from India has set up Sampradhaya Mutts, Vedic centers outside India for which they travel, and when they return back to present India, they take AcharyA SriPadha theertham with a mind set that, it’s all for BhagavAt/BhagavAta Kankaryam. Definitely during travel, following the regular Acharam is difficult, but that is not the main restriction, since travelling within India from south to north Yatra itself need some Acharam to be comprised. So it’s not a big deal, if you like travelling and have some money, for service and or to visit some temples inside or outside India for satisfaction, the world is not a limit.

Those days flights wouldn’t be there. Generally in ships, we cannot urinate & pee directly on water as it is against shastram.

In olden times, for cleansing after mala & jalam, people always use natural water from well or river or ocean. When cleansing, things get mixed in n natural water river or a clean anyway.
When SriRama and his troop constructed Rama Sethu bridge if 100 yojanas (approx 1000 miles), shrinked today. What did they do in middle of ocean for for daily routines and cleansing.
Flight is English name, so we imagine flights as current design, but it was always there in the past as Pushpak Vimaanam but in conical design. Ravana snatched his brothers Pushpak Vimaanam “a.k.a flight” which he used to kidnap Sita devi to cross ocean. After winning war, SriRama along with Sita maata and Vaanaraas returned to Ayodhya by the same Pushpak vimmanam and HE showed Sita about Rama Sethu bridge he constructed.
So water or flight is not the point of reason to restrict brahmins crossing ocean, but to contain them in the area where they served as mentioned earlier.

In olden days my paati & even my mother and all will do “man ettukardhu” around 16 times or so in village. Meaning applying sand after cleansing. There has to be Earthly collection. How on ship or Aeroplane they will do sand applying part which is shastram else why will elders do?
How vanaras and PerumAl did mala jala visarjanam is a question bugging my mind for long time!
Esp. when Perumal, for aprakrutha thirumeni , malam is even applicable?

Also the Ravana’s Vimanam devareer mentioned can expand to accommodate any number of people. Just for reader’s reference to say it was not just mechanical device but magical too!
Agreed. Flight or Vimanam point is the same. Devareer talking about Ravana. What about Dasarathan? He conquered 10 directions by foot? Of course using ratham. The chariot which can fly across 10 directions. It need not be in conical design as it is ratham. We had flights in all shapes & sizes.
Also Upari Sara Vasu he was the first person ever known to use hoverboard 😁 hovering above Earth!?
Point is, who had access to those flights? If Sri Rama himself had to wait for Ravana’s Vimanam what about local people?
So devareer’s point ruled out. Not cross ocean means not cross.
In fact my parents used to say, standing in sea wave in beach itself is wrong. We should not step on samudra Rajan.
In Sri Ram’s case, Samudra Rajan gave prior permission for this Kainkaryam. I don’t think that incident is directly comparable.
For us may be Samudra Rajan one day will respond with tsunami who knows?

Agree with Vikram Swami!
Cleansing using sand (dampened) was a must until a few generations ago. Later it was replaced by water only.
Today we love to build concrete homes without even leaving any space to grow a plant. Such is our selfish mindset to occupy every inch of space for our own selves. Of course, there are certain socio-economic reasons for developing such a crooked mindset. There is no point delving deep into it now.
