Did people of krita, treta yuga know the stories, avataras and concepts present in puranas ??

1st point people in prior yugas were more knowledgeable than us. They had long life & health.
Brahma Sutra required bhashyam because we are less in knowledge & memory.

2nd point puranAs spans chathur yugas , it is too old. Not sure who told devareer it was written only during dwapara Yuga. What is the source?
How in Sri Ram’s avathAram, Vishwamitrar recited Narasimha avataram, ahalyA’s past etc to Sri Ram?
If Valmiki recorded it, purANA dwapara Yuga connection needs re-visit.
It’s not about who writes or when was it written or re-written, it’s about what happened during olden times.
