Swami has given a very balanced answer, taking into account all people at different stages of bhakthi, without diluting the main essential principle of bhakthi.

In summary, Swami explained how it is best to have unconditional bhakthi toward Perumaal and not request for anything material, but since all are not in that state yet, one may at initial stages do so ,until one realizes the compassion and mercy of Perumaal and starts to develop Bhakthi for Perumaal for Himself and not for the benedictions He gives. Swami also states that we should aim to reach this state at least in our 40’s so that we can render unalloyed devotional service for the remaining 30 or so odd years…
