In the song just before the one you have quoted, Thondar-adi-podi-aazhwaar emphatically declares he would even cut his head off to vouch that Lord Rama who conquered Lanka with His bow is the most Supreme Lord.

Then comes the song you have quoted. In his explanation of this song, our Velukkudi Krishnan swamy states that the Aazhwaar is proposing 3 strategies to deal with the speech of those who are stubbornly and blindly speaking ill of Perumal. 1. We should leave the place without hearing even a little; 2. We should end our life then and there; 3. we should win over the other person through strong devotional arguments.

In this instance, the expression  கூடுமேல் தலையை* ஆங்கே,- அறுப்பதே கருமம் கண்டாய் is an expression of frustration and not an expression of actual intent to physically harm the other person. Frustration is because, Aazhwaar is so hurt when people speak ill about Perumal who Himself clears all the hurdles to attain Him. In our material existence if we have to attain something we have to struggle to clear the hurdles. But in case of Perumal, He Himself clears the hurdles and helps us attain Him.  When someone speaks ill of such benevolent Perumal, our Aazhwaar feels like destroying that person (‘s ignorance).

How can we be sure that it is just an expression of frustration and not actual intent to cause physical injury? In the entire history our acharyas have never harmed anyone or taken anybody’s life. They have tried to win over the opposition through devotional debates; never through war or threat. If Thondaradi podi Aazhwaar had actually intended physical harm, his successors would have subscribed to that method. But all our acharyas clearly understood the actual  ஈர சொல் of Thondar-adi-podi-Aazhwaar.
