Horse is the spiritual practices and cart is the material well being.

Eating prasadam with devotional attitude is spiritual. நெய் முழங்கை வழிவார உண்ணலாம்.

If the devotional attitude is missing, or if what is being eaten is not prasadam, then it is material.

At the very least, when one is eating even a non-prasadam, if one gratefully remembers “this is one of God’s mercy upon me”, that part is also spiritual.

The spiritual consciousness is important. Devotional practices help us cultivate spiritual consciousness. Initially it is there whenever we go to temple; then for a few minutes every day. Gradually it expands and we will reach a state of always being in that consciousness.

Putting the horse in front of the cart means, channelising our efforts in not merely feeding people, but contributing in some way or other to help them cultivate spiritual consciousness. This can be as simple as giving a hungry person some prasadam.

மதம் இல்லையெனில் அங்கு உண்மையான மனிதம் எப்படி இருக்க கூடும்? மிருகங்களுக்கு மதம் இல்லை; அவை ஒன்றுக்கு ஒன்று கருணை காட்டுமேயாயினும் அதன் அடிப்படையாக ஒரு வகை தன் நலமே இருக்கும்; தாய் சேய்க்கு காட்டும் கருணையிலும் கூட! இது போன்ற தன் நலத்தின் அடிப்படையில் அமைந்த கருணை நாம் மனித சமூகத்திலும் காணலாம். 

அவன் நலம் கருதி, அவன் உவப்பிற்காக செய்யப்படும் கருணையே உண்மையான கருணை. இந்த கருணை மனித குலத்திற்கு மட்டும் காட்டப்படுவதில்லை; அவன் சொத்து அனைத்திற்கும் காட்டப்படுவது.

Material love is finite. It has an end.

Spiritual love is infinite. It’s effect is endless… eternal

Material love shown to someone has an end; a mother’s love for the child (thinking “this is MY child) ends in this life… or may be a few more life times.

Spiritual love shown (thinking “this is the kainkaryam given by Perumal” is endless. That is how acharyas manifest endless love despite we being ‘strangers’ to them.

The effect of such love is eternal for the person manifesting such love because it is done for pleasing Perumal. Pleasing Him is the ultimate, infinite eternal effect ever possible.

For the receiver of such love also the effect is eternal, because it serves to take him closer to Perumal and thus shortens his stay in the material realm.
