Adiyaar

Dear Shri velukuddi swami

Thanks for the lucid explanation of adiyaar Seva and it’s importance. The question probably out of my ignorance is how to identify an adiyaar. When we visit the temple are the archakaas, the bagawathas who carry Perumal on their shoulders, the people who carry the fire pandham for Perumal, the florist who sells Malai for the temple etc the adiyaar? What does Seva actually mean – Are we supposed to take care of them, their family and their financial and emotional needs? How would one identify a true adiyaar who has immersed themselves to the service of the Lord or all adiyaars the same and it doesn’t matter.

Kindly excuse me in case this has already been clarified earlier and pardon my ignorance

Aravind swamy, namaskaram.

This is a very nice question and I too would like to hear a detailed answer from our Velukkudi swamy or other persons in this forum.

To move the discussion forward, let me add my little input.

Anyone who is rendering kainkaryam to Perumal are ‘adiyars’. Some may be rendering small kainkaryams and for some kainkaryams fill their entire life. Some do it while the mind is absorbed in so many other things, while there are some whose mind is completely absorbed in the kainkaryam only. There is a whole range of devotees and all are ‘adiyaars’ because all are at His Thiruvadi.

In Bhagavad Gita 7.16-18 Perumal mentions about different kinds of devotees who approach Him with some expectation. In Bhagavad Gita chapter 12 (full chapter, particularly 13 to 20) He explains what kind of devotees are dear to Him.

Now to answer your question “what does Seva mean”, for each devotee, whatever stage they are, when we assist or facilitate them through our little mite to render their service / devotion to Perumal, that is Seva. Facilitating each person’s kainkaryam to Perumal is adiyaar-sevai.

When we go by this principle, we can easily determine in what way we can render seva to great acharyas, and in what way we can render service to the adiyaar who has come to the temple with the hope getting some prasadam.

In Enpani 2073, Swami explains what do someone mean when they say “adiyen”. Extrapolating from that, anybody who truly means “adiyen” is an “adiyaar”. Our Swami explains in Enpani 233, 395, 584, 1241, how to behave with adiyaars. Hope this helps.

Vikram Swami, are you referring to this Thirumalai Pasuram 43?
