Swami has explained in Vishnu sahasranmam explanation of the 787th namaam Dur-Ari-haa (killer of eveil people) in vishnu sahasranammam audio no 358, that Lord’s Buddha incarnation was to prevent misuse of vedas. Asuras were becoming stronger by following vedas but misused their strength. Also many people were misusing vedas by rampantly performing animal sacrifices. So to distract attention of wrongly motivated people, was the purpose of buddha incarnation.

p.s:- I vaguely remember that Swami explained that the buddha incarnation referred in scriptures is an old name of incarnation many yugas ago during actual asuras time. But the recent Buddha’s role was also similar.
