Can we speak about scriptures to all irrespective of their interests?

Aneka Koti Namaskaram Swamy

Adiyen have a doubt. Baghavan has graced Adiyen in conducting some Satsangams and encouraging people to learn our Vedas and Upanishads. We also have a WhatsApp group with about 100 people where 5 or 6 read and present our scriptures for benefit of all. We also release monthly magazines with various articles from scriptures.

Many in the group are beginners but are my friends and relatives. They also try to learn something but I am not sure if the group is fully utilizing it. This is the background of my question for your better understanding of the context in which it is asked.

Upanishads themselves say that we shall not preach them to others, unless people themselves approach and reveal their interests. Even in case someone approach, one should test the person for his eligibility to learn and then only preach.

I am a common man with half baked knowledge and is not capable of accessing eligibility of anyone, while I am not sure if I am first eligible to preach others. However, I am interested in sharing what I learn with others.

Secondly, if the glory of our scriptures are not preached to others, future generations may not even be aware of the terms, “Vedas or Upanishads”. Even in our group, these terms were quite new to few before joining. Few don’t even knew that something called Moksha exists before joining. So, how can we expect that people will approach themselves with interest to learn, while they are first of all not aware of existence of such things?

In this situation, is it right to volunteer to preach others what we read or should we follow mounam until someone approaches with real interests themselves?

Sorry for long post. I gave the back ground as the question may lead to some mis-understanding.

Hare Krishna! Aneha koti namaskaram!

Thanks for posting this question as Adiyen also have this confusion for a long time. It would be a bless if our Swamy clears this doubt.

Below are few verses connected to the topic from Bhagavad Gita, however, there may be other verses (or other scriptures) that may need to be looked at (in a broader sense), in conjunction with these verses that Adiyen is not aware of.

Bg 3.26 — So as not to disrupt the minds of ignorant men attached to the fruitive results of prescribed duties, a learned person should not induce them to stop work. Rather, by working in the spirit of devotion, he should engage them in all sorts of activities.

Bg 18.67 — This confidential knowledge may never be explained to those who are not austere, or devoted, or engaged in devotional service, nor to one who is envious of Me.

Bg 18.68 — For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, pure devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me.

Bg 18.69 — There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear.

Adiyen Sri Velukkudi Krishna Dasan

This question itself is answering adiyen’s previous question. Velukkudi Swamy has told “Sri Ramanuja has made the eligibility criteria as Aasai Udayor Kellaam meaning those who are interested that is the qualification”.

This means we need not say to those who are not interested. Porul nanna irundha vaanga pora. So lets share only basics. Adiyen used to discuss in office. Adiyen used to call my colleagues and keep a session.

One colleague of mine have started adhering to EKADESHI VRATHAM. This gives me immense pleasure. The way adiyen explained was “Ekadeshi vratham is useful for health”. Then after he fasted for a day adiyen explained “Sri Nambaaduvaan Charithram” and the glories of Sri Maha Vishnu.

All the praises are surrendered to my Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy’s lotus feets.

Kotana Koti Namaskarams to Shri Krishna Daasan Swamy and Shri Vikram Swamy.

Thank you both for detailed explanation.

I understand that we may beginners the basics first and if they find it more interesting, then we may take them further into the nectar ocean of Vedanta. Of course I am also half baked and will be learning throughout life.

Very valid responses and really thank you for the same.
