Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,
Namsakaram venarkkt swami,
In General, adiyen will share Velukkudi Swami’s past Upanyasams/Enpani with Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam that the focus of our life should be to understand “What is the goal of this “Body (Shareeram) & JeevAthma (Ourselves)?” and how to make our everyday activities REVOLVE around “ParamAthma (BhagavAn SriKrishna)” in the CENTER of our life with Alwar’s/Acharya’s grace”.
Body is just a Tool given to us (JeevAthma) by BhagavAn Sriman NarayAnan for every jeevAthma to get rid of ones karma and do Kainkaryam to BhagavAn and reach Moksham in same birth.
[Adiyen pulled the below information from a Sri Vaishanava Blog, and adiyen honestly don’t know the translator name, so adiyen show gratitude to the translator who translated the information from Velukkudi Swami’s “NithyaAnushtanam” upanyasam]
Some Glossary to understand
Ashnutanam Avasya Karthavyam is what all our Poorvacharyas have been advocating and leading us by example.
Classification of Anushtanam
Classification based on rules to be followed by Men or Women.
Classification based on External (வெளி தோற்றம்) or Internal (அந்தரம்) anushtanams.
Three types of Cleanliness (Abhigamanam) for a JeevAthma
Whatever we do from waking up till cleaning ourselves is abhigamanam. Cleanse myself to proceed to the next step of cleaning other items to get ready for BhagavAn’s Aaradhana (poojai).
1. Shareera Suddhi (External) – Cleanliness of the body (Achuthaya Namaha).
2. Manasu Suddhi (Internal) – Cleanliness of mind (Ananthaya Namaha).
This will result in looking at happiness, sorrow the same without ahankaram, mamakaram. One needs to work towards improving the athma gunam which leads to manasu suthi.
3. Athma Suddhi (Internal) – Cleanliness of Athma (Govindaya Namaha)
Athma getting rid of karma, vasanai, ruchi is how an athma cleanses itself. Those are the dirt in athma which does not allow an athma to experience the true knowledge an athma possess.
Basic anushtanam
- Wake up during brahma muhurtham between 4 to 5 AM
- Say Hari namam 7 times
- Think of our poorvacharya paramparai by mentally saying “Lakshmi natha samarambham..”
- Think of perumal’s 5 roopam – Para, Vyuh, Vibhava, Archai, Antaryami by saying “Min meethu ..” pasuram. One can also recite parathvadhi panchangam by Nadathur ammal ( vathsya Varadachari) which has 5 verses of these roopam.
- Look at Perumal photo as you wake up. Even when going to bed think of Perumal and see his photos.
- Sleep on the floor or raised bed with thick blanket if floor is cold as in colder places. Try to avoid sleeping on cushion bed or pillows.
- Then as you wake up attend to nature’s call, brush/clean your mouth.
- 8. Go for a bath. Do not do anything or drink anything without taking bath
- Always take bath by wearing some clothes and always take head bath. Use water from river, well. If not, use tap water but do not have a shower, since water needs to first touch our feet going upwards to head like river bathing. Shower does the opposite effect since water flows from head to feet, which is not good for health. In river bathing, this concern is not there, since water touches from feet to head in sequential order. Collect the tap water in a bucket and do manasa aradanam. Do manasa aradhanam for the bathing water thinking it is from the great rivers of ganga, yamuna, cauvery, Airamatha Pushkarani (which adiyen think about since it is beyond Virajai nadhi)
- Apply Thiruman kappu based on the rules prescribed for men , women
- As you apply thiruman, start reciting Nithyaanusandanam which includes – Vakya Guru parampara, Sloka guru parampara, Aacharya thaniyan. Also start reciting Thirumanthiram, dwayam, charma slokam. Thirumanthiram need to be recited in the morning and one can say 108 times. Dwayam need to be meditated all through the day both the slogam and the meaning of dwayam. One needs to keep thinking and meditating on Guru paramparai and Dwayam all through the day.
- Starting with Daya patram.. recite all the slogams
- Recite Nithyaanusandhanam – minimum Thirupallandu, Thirupalliyezhuchu, Thirupavai. if time permits Ramanuja nootrandhadhi, Gadya thrayam, Stotra ratnam, chatusloki, jeethanthe stotram for men. Recite aachayra thaniyan.
- Do SandhyavAndhanam , madhyanikam as per the rules on time. Ensure that gayatri japam is done during surya udayam.
- While cooking women can continue to recite Nithya anusanthanam.
So, SandhyaVandhanam (in the morning) is 15th step after the 8th step, since it involves holy mantras chanting which requires “Shareera Suddhi” to be completed first to proceed on the entire ‘Abhigamanam’ cleansing process”.
There could be exceptions of bathing when one is sick, and in those situations BhagavAn SriKrishna is very accommodative due to HIS Karunai, but the standard rule is as above in normal times.
FYI, There are more than 16 steps for daily activities by men and women service to BhagavAn at Home. Adiyen just stopped referring further due to the question limited to Sandhya Vandhanam.
