How to practically differentiate need, desire and greed?

Aneka Koti Namaskarams to Shri Velukkudi Swamy.

As per our scriptures, Kama, Krodha, Loba, Moha, Mada and Matsarya are six enemies that obstruct the path of Moksha.

When it comes to Loba, it is very difficult to differentiate need, genuine material desire and greed or excessive desire.

For example, Adiyen bought a car, to take my parents to Divya Desams, especially Tirupathi frequently. Till last year, we visited Tirumala once in a month or two. They have difficulty travelling in bus or train due to knee pain, hip pain etc. A third person may say, Adiyen have Kama or desire for a car. But, it has become a need to Adiyen’s family. Yet, Adiyen is not attached to car. If someone scratch the car, Adiyen don’t quarrel with them.

A three bedroom flat may look like luxury for a person living in a hut. But, it may be a need for a person who is already living in two bedroom flat and have no space for more items.

Airconditioner is a luxury. But, due to changing climate, most of the people use, especially in metropolitan cities.

In areas where there are lot of power cuts, inverter has become mandatory. I know our ancestors lived in oil lamp even without electricity.

But, in such embarrassing situation, considring today’s life style, how an individual can practically decide between need, desire and greed?

Devarir give answers that don’t deviate from scriptures but at the same time practically adaptable in this age. Kindly clear Adiyen’s ignorance in this regard.

Adiyen want to quote only one thing from my Velukkudi Swamy’s EnPaNi itself. Anything that gives “Contention” “thrupthi” is NEED. In devar’s case the sukham is not due to Car. It’s due to Divya Desam and parents paripaalanam. Amma appa nanna vechukardha Vida oru sukham irukka enna?

Secondly aduthavAlukkAga nAma vAnzhndhOmna we would be required to change ourselves every moment. KrishnanukkAga vAnzhndhOmna Avar ellAraiyum namakEthAmAdhri change panniduvAr.

However, Adiyen shall listen again and again several times with full concentration and take notes to memorize. But, Swamy has explained very beautifully.

Swami in Kinchit Yuva Vikas  (26) dated 19-August-2018 Vellukudi Swami explains about Surrender and describes about needs vs Luxury in principle.

Srimathe Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha
In that audio Sri Velukkudi Swamy says “buying a second home” may amount to greed while sending father to emergency amounts to need.

Adiyen have a different view “Any property that will assist Sri BhAgavatha kainkaryam is okay.

We need to be detached. The richness should not impact our mind. We should be good enough to discard the profit or loss gained from the richness just like Janakar in Srimad Ramayanam.

More recently Koorathaazhwaan, Sri ParAshara bhattar (probably after marriage).

Big business men (don’t want to name) are assisting Sri SampradhAyam.

SampradhAyam accepts their funding for public welfare. It means the modus operandi is accepted.

So earning more is not a sin. In fact let us accept the fact we are in Vaishya dharma and for name sake to term it better “at mind level” we are Brahmins

It is our responsibility to restore our dharma

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Well said bhagavata with Swami’s anugraham and with bhagavatas Acharya Krupai as:

“Adiyen have a different view “Any property that will assist Sri BhAgavatha kainkaryam is okay. We need to be detached. The richness should not impact our mind. We should be good enough to discard the profit or loss gained from the richness just like Janakar in Srimad Ramayanam”.

In addition to Swami’s above audios as referenced by other bhagavatas in this thread, Swami again beautifully tells in todays enpani 1124 “Necessity or Luxury” about how to draw line.

Srimathe Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha

Excellent explanation Swamy EnPaNI 1124.

1..
Necessity will improve health
Luxury will decrease health
There comes the line of differentiation
2. VairAgyam to leave things of past . To live without something.

Koti Namaskaarams Swamy

Adiyen listened to Devarir’s speech in Enpani today. Thank you very much for taking time to explain. Adiyen will try to test myself and find out the luxuries in life per Devarir’s advise. Also, Adiyen will attempt to develop Viragam even towards necessities.

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dear BhagavAta,

Regarding self-test based on Swamus audio, adiyen would recommend Swamis past enpani 156 “permanent anandam”.

Swamis says Tathriya upanishadh says Anandham us classified in to 4 levels as 1) priya, 2) modha, 3) pramodha and 4) aanandha.

So we can apply these, anything that is USEFUL and NOT an obstruction to “permenent anandham (Brahmanandham ‘bhagavanai anubhavipadhu) is a “Necessity”.

Like, whastapp is a necessity, if utilized for listening to spiritual audios or doing satsang, but if utiluzed only for personal chatting, then it is luxury, and to be discarded.
So anything that can be utilized for Brahmanandam is a Necessity.

En PaNi 151-200

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah! Sri Sriranga Narayana Jeeyar Swamigale Saranam!

Velukkudi Swamigal Thiruvadigale Saranam!

Beautiful explanations by Swamy and forum members. Adiyen heard it from Gaudiya Sampradayam and very much made sense to me as we also follow it very closely. Anything we do or have, we should keep Krishna in the center instead of us. From bhoga that we prepare to kids we have to the riches we acquire, if we center our consciousness around Krishna then it’s good. I very much remember the holidays during my childhood we used to go where yatras to temples and any sightseeing around that was a secondary thing. We never considered that as a luxury. But if we do a foreign vacation today then it’s definitely a luxury. If we prepare 100s of varieties for Sri jayanthi it’s not luxury as we preparing for the Lord to enjoy. But if we do it for a personal party then it’s luxury. So keeping Krishna is the key.
