Swamy, this is the problem faced by many of us; the degree to which each one of us is affected may keep varying with time; but it is a fact that many of us are affected by this problem.

I have come to understand that the only effective solution to this problem is kainkaryam to acharyan. You may seek your acharyan to assign you some kainkaryam in which you can apply yourself a little bit everyday. Whatever he says you do it, even if it seems too trivial, simple, easy and inconsequencial. Over several months / years increase the duration and devotion in the  ‘little bit kainkayam’ you are doing everyday. This will help see that all the bad things in our heart beginning with kaama, krodha etc., will steadily decrease and eventually disappear.
