Pancha Maha yajnya – brahma Deva pitru manushya and bhuta yajnyas are the necessary ones. Besides these daily aradhanam is an effective yajnya. The root “yaj” means “Deva puja”

In this Kali Yuga, no person is eligible to carry out any Yagnas.  As Lord Krishna says, Japa Yagna is the only way for salvation for getting moksha in Kaliyuga.

So, my opinion is: Devote as much time as possible in reciting Lord’s name. Don’t listen too much to the upanyasams, don’t read too much the Puranaas etc.  Reciting Lord’s nama will give you the actual enlightenment.  Even, our Lord Krishna is called Giridhara, who prevented the yagna to be given to Indira and instead advised to do pooja to Govardana Giri. During those days, various yagnas were done – ashwamedha yagna, gomedha yagna, etc. etc.  wherein lots of innocent animals were killed for the material benefit of the Yajaman of the Yagna.  They say those innocent animals were elevated to Devas’ status. All yagnas were carried out for the material comforts.  So, apply the Yagna concept to the contemporary world.  Choose a dharmic profession / employment.  Be devoted to it whether you are getting profit out of it or not.  That’s yagna.  If you want to get liberated, chant His names.
