Priority to Spirituality

AcharyAs ask us to put leave and attend upanyAsam or spiritual events.

While we give more priority to office work and discard nithyakarmAnushtAnam or don’t bother delays.

What should be our priority?

We speak about work-life balance but we seldom speak about work-spiritual balance.

Is work God? If so, can we constantly think by being good employee we don’t care about thiruvArAdhanam or Sandhyavandhanam,

Perumal will still accept us?

Perumal is  accepting us even if we have lot more doshams than this. Like a cow likes her calf; the cow licks and removes the ‘doshams’ sticking on the calf and continues to show her love. 

 

So, our question is not “will Perumal still love me?” Our question should be “am I trying to express my love to Perumal to the best extent possible?”

If we are applying ourself to the instructions and prescriptions of sastram and acharyas to the best of our ability, then we are trying to express our love to Perumal to the best extent possible.

Is work God? If so, can we constantly think by being good employee?From vikraminside

Work is not God. Perumal explains His Vibhutis in the 10th chapter of Bhagavad Gita; no where He says “of all the activities/engagements I am work”. But from the third chapter we learn He is the personification of Sacrifice, and all our work must be targeted towards sacrifice. So, in our daily lives, the word ‘sacrifice’ can include all the things prescribed by sastram and acharyas. As long as our office work is helping us to do our ‘sacrifices’ properly, that kind of work is proper expression of our love to Perumal. On the otherhand, if we engage in over-work at the cost of our ‘sacrifices’ then it is not expression of our love to Perumal.

To make it easier, let us take our family situation. As long as I do my office work to earn enough to do the needful for my family, that is expression of love towards my family. On the other hand, if I keep on doing work neglecting what I am supposed to do for my family, that is not expression of love towards family.

 

In reality, all our activities including office work and family responsibilities are to be executed in such a manner that it facilitates our prescribed anustanams in a regulated manner to Perumal. That is proper way of expression of our love towards Him.

If we had the fortune to lead our whole life the way our ancestors did, it is possible to fill our entire day with anushtanams, . In today’s situation such application is not possible. So, please express your constraints & limitations to your acharya and receive instructions on what you can practically do in the current situation, and stick to that with due regulation. The sincerity in our effort is an expression of our gratitude and love towards acharya; Perumal also sees it the same way.

“work life balance” is a western concept. In sanatana dharma work, life, family, recreation, eating, sleeping, etc etc – everything is meant for spiritual perfection when we apply ourselves in the prescribed manner. Every moment of a 24 hour day we (are supposed to) engage in manner to express our love to Perumal. Please see 6.17 and 9.27 in Bhagavad Gita.

1. What is work

Work is always kainkerium
No matter what you do

But the thought “I am doing the work ” is the problem

All wordly affairs are done by jeevatma only under the holy feet of Acharya

So any thing done under the holy feet of Acharya is always kainkerium

No individual can work independently

This is kartritva thyagam Bhagavat Gita 2 adiyayum

So all work is spiritual

2. Who is doing

Only Acharya is doing all the work though the agency of individual jeevatma

But mind thinks it is doing itself that is the problem

This is mama thyagam Bhagavat Gita 2 adiyayum

3. Who is creating the difference between spirituality and wordly affairs

mind is creating the difference
There is only spirituality
Worldly affairs is a concept of mind not a reality

Acharya is the only reality

4.what is wordly affairs made of

World affairs is the Leela of Acharya
Acharya does the Leela through the agency of sishya

So what ever work one is doing is actually done by Acharya alone and so the benefits to only Acharya

This is palan thyagam Bhagavat Gita 2 adiyayum

So no matter what one is doing but the three thyagam make all work spiritual

So one can surrender to Acharya
Things will happen automatically

No. Only spiritual work has spiritual effect. Material work does not bring spiritual effect. Material work only leads to karma. Krishna clearly makes the difference between prescribed work and proscribed work in 3, 16 and 17th chapters of Bhagavad Gita.

The kind of work prescribed by sastram or the kind of work approved by acharya (more relevant in the present day context) can have spiritual effect if we apply ourselves in the mood of submission to sastram / acharya.

Only Acharya is doing all the work though the agency of individual jeevatmaFrom MADAN

This is not in agreement with Bhagavad Gita 5.14 – 5.15. Please hear our swamy’s upanyasam on these verses. We can clearly understand based on Ramanujacharya’s commentary, and not get confused by random interpretations from other sources.

In short, each jiva has the freewill to act according to sastram/acharya’s instruction or not to do so. If we act as per sastram/acharya’s instruction then their mercy executes the activity and we are merely the ‘nimiththa’. Therefore we do not incur any karma out of such actions. Contrarily, if we act outside the guidance given by sastram/ acharyas, then we as individuals are responsible for the outcome and therefore we incur karmic reaction arising out of it.

 

Who is creating the difference between spirituality and wordly affairsFrom MADAN

Perumal is clearly spelling out what is kainkaryam and what is karmic. So it is not a mere imagination.

 

mind is creating the difference. There is only spirituality. Worldly affairs is a concept of mind not a reality From MADAN

This understanding is not in line with Ramanuja-sampradayam. Kindly hear from our swamy’s upanyasams, and read from commentaries based on Ramanujacharya. Reading other sources will lead to wrong understanding and confusion.

ellAm – all objects (which give sustenance, nourishment and enjoyment)
kaNNan – being krishNa, the son of vasudhEva as said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 7.19 “vAsudhEva sarvam” (Everything is krishNa)

Since devareer quoted a lot from Srimad Bhagavad Gita, adiyen wanted to ask this question to you for a long time.

Where did you get the Gita having Ramanujacharya’s commentaries? Is it available in pdf form? 

I am sorry since this question is not related to this topic. But I feel that this is the correct sandarbham to ask this question.

Devareer initially contradicted to the statement:
“So all work is Spiritual”

& said:
“No. Only spiritual work has spiritual effect. Material work does not bring spiritual effect. Material work only leads to karma”

Swamy NammAzhwar opines eating beetle leaf (a luxury ) is also Krishna. Then how come Devareer say “All work cannot be spiritual”?

If I think of Krishna & do something, how can it not be called as Spiritual?

Even brushing teeth is spiritual for me

I say Hari Nama even in toilet

So how come “all work not spiritual & lead to karma”?

So Devareer has to classify “spiritual’ vs “non spiritual work”

Any work leads to Karma not just spiritual .

Spiritual work leads to PuNya

A punya karma golden handcuff says Swamy Desikan
A paapa karma is iron handcuff says Swamy Desikan

Now ball is in deval’s court to explain
To me everything is spiritual even the fights we have

All conforms to his leela only

His leela Is Superset
We are Subset of him

When we say “free-,will” we think we are doing but actually he is making us do. This is the secret.
